Submitted by Council Chair on

On Thursday, August 18, Winchester residents have a special opportunity to see and meet local artists. Meet-the-artist receptions will take place at five locations around town, featuring seven different artists: fabric artists Sue Clark, Denise Konicek and Kiyomi Yatsuhashi; jewelry maker Wendy Jo New, painter and jewelry maker Teri Coté, and painters Michiko Katsumi and Lucia Rubini. All receptions are from 6–8 p.m.

These artist receptions, part of Art in August 2022, are where you can learn more about the artists, ask about their work see more of what they have to offer. Refreshments will be served. Come and have a cultural evening downtown!

Wendy Jo New produces fine contemporary jewelry and other metal designs primarily in the precious metals of gold, silver, palladium, and/or platinum. Sue Clark makes traditional quilts and three-dimensional quilted objects that are loaded with color and contrast. She love to work with fabric because of the seemingly endless range of materials, textures and color; she thrives on the challenge to experiment with new techniques.

Barrett Sotheby’s International Realty, 48 Mt. Vernon Street, will host Denise Konicek and Kiyomi Yatsuhashi.

Denise Konicek combines her training in art and her love of sewing to create quilts and other fiber art. From 2009–2017, she studied with Beatriz Grayson, former Winchester resident and internationally known art quilter.

Denise's traditional quilts have been juried into several national quilt shows. In 2015 Denise became a juried member of Cambridge Artist Association (CAA) and in Fall 2019 she achieved full Professional Artist membership. In 2019 she joined the Art Quilters Association (SAQA), an international artist group and her quilt “Flight of Idea(l)s” is in a traveling exhibition.

Kiyomi Yatsuhashi grew up in Winchester. She studied Art History at Tufts University and Studio Arts at the Museum School, focusing on printmaking and mixed media. After workshops at Haystack School of Crafts and with Kiranada Sterling Benjamin at Mass College of Art, she was inspired to research Japanese textile dyeing at Kyoto City University of Art. For over 20 years, she has been working with Japanese techniques such as rozome wax-resist, katazome stencil, shibori and indigo dyeing. She says, "My imagery and process are inspired by the power and wonder of each season as displayed in the sky, water and wind. With my textiles, I’d like to share this experience by creating spaces where one can relax and reflect on the beauty of nature."

Lucia Rubini will hold a special reception at her studio, Rubini Art, at 22 Park Street, featuring her own work and that of her students.

Born in Bari, Italy, Lucia attended the Academy of Fine Arts, guided by the inspirational works of Leonardo Da Vinci and her arts professors, Labianca and Antonini, among the most famous in France. She moved to Boston to finish her studies at the Art Academy of Boston. In 2010, she opened “Rubini Art,” an art studio and place of education for art lovers of all ages. In 2014, she created “Van Vogue” fashion show, born from the idea to merge feminine beauty with the harmony of artistic technique. It was shown in Bari, Italy and also in Boston, to rave reviews. In the spring of 2019, Lucia produced a very successful student show at her gallery which attracted the attention of Italian TV, where it was featured in a special program that summer.
