Born in Norwich, Connecticut, the daughter of fine artist, Barbara Dawiczyk Vartenigian, Ms. Vartenigian Burhans was a participant in the art program at the Norwich Free Academy. In 1985 she continued her studies at the fine art school of the University of Connecticut where she graduated Cum Laude. From 1993-1995, she was the Artist in Residence at the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Connecticut. There she studied under the sculptor and painter, M. Praxedes Baxter. During her residency, Ms. Vartenigian Burhans held several exhibitions and developed her work within the daily life of the contemplative Benedictine monastery.

Ms. Vartenigian Burhans has been an exhibiting artist for over 20 years and a private art instructor of such media as pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, and oil painting. Recently she has brought her artistry to bear in the media of film making as Art Director and Production Designer on a number of projects.
