Art in August

The Winchester Cultural Council and Winchester Artists’ Network Present Art in August 2016

Art in August is now in full swing and, once again, Local Artists, Downtown Businesses, and The Winchester Artists’ Network have transformed Winchester’s beautiful town center into a veritable artists’ colony. In 2016, the 17th year of this unusual event, more than 50 artists, ranging in age from less than 6 to over 80 years, have works on show during the entire month in the windows and within some 30 downtown businesses.

You may admire hundreds of art works created using practices ranging from those thousands of years old to the latest computer renderings and digital cinema. There is painting, drawing, sculpture, woodworking, jewelry, photography, pottery, and more. The artists range from noted professionals to amateurs only recently drawn to art. Each and every one has something wonderful to show. A brochure with an art map listing the artists and their locations as well as a host of enjoyable Art in August events may be had at the participating downtown businesses that, as in the past, are identified by the colorful, fluttering pink, orange and, yellow Art in August pennants.

The many associated events begin on Thursday, August 4, at 7 pm, at the corner of Thompson and Main Streets, with the traditional Art Walk, a guided tour of the window displays introducing and exploring the art and artists. On succeeding Thursdays, there will be “Meet the Artists” receptions held at various businesses from 6–8 pm on August 11, 18, and 25. Art in August events culminate on Saturday, August 27 with Art in the Park, a morning’s celebration of hands-on art for all ages held on the Town Common in association with the Farmers’ Market. There will be easel painting, a clay table, fabric collage, and more.

Many towns host weekend open studios or street fairs. Winchester is remarkable in transforming the entire downtown into an arts destination for a whole month. Who needs to drive for hours? Take this opportunity to abandon the mall, abandon the car, and get to know Winchester’s uniquely beautiful and walkable Downtown. View and visit unusual local businesses richly embellished with art; meet and get to know the accommodating and friendly folks who staff them. You’ll be glad you did.

All events are free of charge to the public.
